Outreach: Liberia Relief
Lovette Tucker, a member of Holy Comforter and originally from Liberia, has become a Missionary of sorts to the Liberian Refugees who are arriving in this country as their "promised land". We at Holy Comforter can participate in this program by donating items to help the many families begin NEW LIVES in this country, while learning about the generosity of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Lovette reports, "To date, myself and other individuals who are Liberian, have met to figure out what we want to do to help. Basically, our efforts will involve the following three areas.
+ Immediate relief - Provide immediate items for the family when they first come in, meet them at the airport (Bush), welcome them to Houston, fix up apartments so they meet it nice and neat.
+ Advocacy - Some families who have been here for a year are having problems due to language and other barriers. I have been in contact with HISD and we make home visits for particular visits. These problems involve inappropriate placement for children (i.e. being placed in Special Ed when they need something else). I've also spoken with the resettlement agencies. Get involved with other programs they provide that may be useful to the refugees i.e. literacy classes, computer job search, after school programs, tutorials, etc.
+ Referrals - depending on the specific family situation, we are developing a referral list to health, job, child care agencies that can provide on-site services. I would also like to have an awareness day so that people like HPD can come and talk about safety issues, Child protective services can talk about how to correct discipline, etc.
Contact Lovette at 281-374-6811 with any questions or to arrange a pick-up. For smaller items a donation box will be in the Parish Hall. Thank you for your prayers and everything.
In Loving Memory…
The church was shocked this week to learn that one of our most faithful members, Someone Else, had passed away. This death creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Someone Else had been with us for many years. During all those years, he did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration, as well as results. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend---one name was on everyone’s list: “Let Someone Else do it.” Someone Else was also among the biggest givers in the church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference. This beloved church member was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing superhuman, but one person can only do so much. Everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone. Who will pitch in to do the things that Someone Else has always done? If you are asked to take a job in the church, we hope you won’t reply, “Let Someone Else do it.” Now we need you to pick up where Someone Else left off. Please remember that everyone is important and that all are needed to fill in the gaps.
Cursillo
Cursillo is Spanish for "short course." Over 8,400 parishioners in the Diocese of Texas have made their Cursillo, which can be a time of spiritual awakening, renewal, and development of leadership skills. All weekends are held at beautiful Camp Allen and will be an experience in your spiritual journey you will never forget!
2006 weekend left this year is #214 November 2nd - 5th. The charge for the November weekend is only $110. The cost for other weekends is $195, which includes meals, a nice motel-style room, and materials. The November dates are at Campsite 3, a more rustic setting with dormitory-style accommodations where attendees sleep in bunk beds, hence the lower cost.
2007 weekend dates are #215 February 1st - 4th; #216 June 14th - 17th; #217 August 2nd - 5th; #218 November 1st - 4th (Campsite)

Missionary Globe Banks
Holy Comforter continues to support our parishioners who are missionaries. Sandy Hennip was commissioned at the 10:30 service on October 12, 2003 and returned in 2006. She grew up at Holy Comforter and is living out in a global way “Disciples Making Disciples". The summer of 2003, Peggy Brast, Jeanie Lechuga, Lee Waggoman and Lynn Shirley were missionaries to Honduras, Guatemala and Ecuador. Our Youth Minister in 2004, Rachel Redding, joined the missionary ranks in the summer of 2004 on a mission trip to India. Check out their reports. Our youth all became missionaries in our own 3rd Ward of Houston in the summer of 2004. In 2005 one of our members, Link Hullar, went on a mission trip to Chili. Peggy Brast has returned to Honduras every summer, including 2006, on a medical mission. Please check out our missionary links and read their reports of their missionary trips.
Buy your missionary Globe Bank for $2. These banks will help us provide a more substantial means of support for our missionaries. You can make a difference in their ministry by participating. How??? At home, you can insert coins or bills into the globes and as you deposit your monies, you offer prayers of protection and encouragement for them. Once the globes are filled, you can turn in the funds to the church office. A special missionary account fund has been set up and all monies received through these globes will be placed in this account. Any special designation of funds needs to be noted when you turn in your money. A special emphasis for financial support of these missionaries is conducted during our Lenten programs each year. Funds collected during the Lenten dinners will be placed into the missionary fund and divided equally among our missionaries. You may use the globes as your mite box during Lent. At the end of Lent, the globes will be blessed on the altar. Please continue to pray for our missionaries as they continue to faithfully serve God by “Making Disciples!” If you have any questions or would like to assist in this ministry, please see Sandy Ferguson in the church office.
